Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Adopt-A-Trail program?
The program is an opportunity for conservation-minded groups of all sizes and types to sponsor a section of Jones Park’s extensive trail system by controlling invasive non-native plants and conducting routine trail maintenance.
What kinds of groups can help?
ANY group can help! For example, scout, school and church groups, home-school groups, conservation organizations, companies in need of volunteer hours for their employees, etc. There is no maximum or minimum size group, but please consult a staff member in the nature center with your individual needs.
How long is a sponsorship?
Sponsoring groups will be asked to commit to maintaining a section of trail for a minimum of one year.
What is involved in sponsoring a trail?
Groups will be assigned a section of Jones Park’s trail system, based on the size and ability of the group. Each group will be led by a staff member and must commit at least one 3-4 hour workday every three months to remove invasive plants.
I can’t tell one plant from another. Can my group still help?
YES! The full workday begins with a short training session in invasive plant identification and removal methods, as well as chemical control methods. A staff member will accompany the group on each workday to help with removal and “on-site” plant identification. Chemicals, however, are only applied by
licensed staff members.
Individuals interested in the Adopt-A-Trail program without a sponsoring group can join our existing JJP Eradicators group by coming out for our workdays every third Saturday of each month from 9-11 a.m. Volunteers should meet in the Nature Center before heading out to the worksite.
What are the benefits for my group?
In addition to receiving a custom laser-etched sign designating your section of adopted trail, each group will be helping Jones Park remain in a natural and native state. Not only will future visitors to the park benefit from your efforts, the native wildlife will benefit from the removal of invasive plant species.
How does my group sign up?
Please have the leader/contact person of your group contact Jones Park at 281-446-8588 or email@example.com to discuss options for your group.
