Congestion Mitigation Air Quality Program Traffic Management System
Precinct 4 and the Harris County Public Infrastructure Department-Engineering Division, Traffic and Transportation Group determined traffic management systems were needed to improve the level of service on many of the major corridors within Precinct 4.
The traffic management system incorporates the installation of intersection improvements and/or traffic signals or traffic signal modifications integrated with a fiber optic interconnect system. The fiber optic interconnect system allows for an improved method of synchronizing the traffic signals and monitoring the system to ensure it is working as designed.
This is a joint participation project between Harris County and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Precinct Four is responsible for the project design and funding 20% of the construction costs. TxDOT will fund 80% of the construction costs, bid/award and manage the construction activity. TXDOT let the CMAQ II project on August 8, 2007 and notice to proceed was given on November 19, 2007. Signal construction is now complete. Installation of the fiber optic interconnect system is scheduled to commence in the 2nd quarter of 2010.
