Big Stone Lodge’s September Calendar Bookmark

Big Stone Lodge’s free intergenerational programs are part of Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner R. Jack Cagle’s educational and recreational commitment to Harris County residents. Big Stone Lodge is located in Dennis Johnston Park at 709 Riley Fuzzel Road, Spring 77373. In observance of Labor Day, the Center closes Friday, Sept. 1 after 5 p.m. and reopens Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 8 a.m. Harris County Precinct 4 programs serve people of all ages regardless of socioeconomic level, race, color, sex, religion, national origin, or physical ability. Anyone requiring special assistance to participate in any program should contact Big Stone Lodge. An adult must accompany children under the age of 18. Childcare is not provided at any Precinct 4 facility and children are not allowed in classes in which they are not eligible to participate.

Special Events


Archery in the Park. Friday, Sept. 1 at 9 a.m. Precinct 4 Trails as Parks (TAP) instructors will offer archery lessons at Dennis Johnston Park. Archery equipment is provided and attendees may bring their own equipment as long as their arrow tips have target or field points. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and bring water.

Property Taxes Workshop. Friday, Sept. 1 at 1 p.m. Join Scott Hilsher of the County Attorney’s Office and the Harris County Tax Office for an educational presentation on the property tax process for senior adults. Participants will learn about exemptions, appraisals, billing, payment plans and options, deferrals, and estate planning. While tailored to seniors, the presentation is open to the community. 12-Week Beginners Line Dancing Course. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:10 a.m. to 11:10 a.m. beginning Sept. 5 Participants can master the steps that can be used for any line dancing song in this twelve-week introductory course. A volunteer instructor will prepare students for the Improvers Line Dancing course also offered at the Center. Call 281-350-1029 to register.

Painting 4 Fun. Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 2 p.m. Artists of all skill levels are welcome to spend an afternoon creating their own masterpieces at Big Stone Lodge in Dennis Johnston Park. Accomplished artist Casey Marshall will lead a two-hour class with step-by-step instructions on creating a lively work of art from beginning to end. Call 281-350-1029 to register.

Create Your Own Terrariums. Thursday, Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. Join Naturalist Coordinator Kris Linberk with the Precinct 4 Trails as Parks (TAP) Big Stone Lodge in Dennis Johnston Park for an exciting and educational project to make a custom living terrarium. In this hands-on workshop, Linberk will demonstrate how these low maintenance gardens are ideal for boosting oxygen in homes, offices, and small spaces. Call 281-350-1029 to register.

Trip Sign Up. Tuesday, Sept. 12 at noon Sign up is on a first-come, first-served basis. Transportation is provided for individuals 50 and better through Harris County Precinct 4’s Senior Adult Program. A Harris County Precinct 4 bus will pick up and drop off participants at Spring Baptist Church, located at 633 E. Louetta Road in Spring, for the following October trip: • Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 9 a.m. – Galveston Ghost Tour. The cost is $17 per person. Lunch is on your own at Shrimp N Stuff.

Spindletop Gladys City Boomtown Museum Trip, Beaumont. Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 8:30 a.m. Trip sign-up is on a first-come, first-served basis at Big Stone Lodge. The cost is $4 per person. Lunch is on your own at Cracker Barrel Old Country Store. Transportation is provided for individuals 50 and better through Harris County Precinct 4’s Senior Adult Program. A Harris County Precinct 4 bus will pick up and drop off participants at Spring Baptist Church, located at 633 E. Louetta Road in Spring.

AARP Smart Driver Course. Wednesday, Sept. 13 at noon Reduce your car insurance by as much as 10 percent by completing AARP’s Smart Driver Course. This class cannot be used for ticket dismissal. Certificates are rewarded upon course completion. A $15 fee is required for AARP members with proof of membership and a $20 fee is required for non-members. Checks are payable to AARP. Advance registration is required, so please call or come by Big Stone Lodge to reserve a seat.

Forget the Siesta, Let’s Fiesta! Luncheon. Friday, Sept. 15 at 11:30 a.m. Big Stone Lodge invites the community to a friendly fiesta featuring Tino and Jose, The Rock ‘n Roll Mariachis. Ben’s Chuck Wagon will provide chicken and beef fajitas, rice, borracho beans, chips, queso, dessert, and unlimited iced tea and coffee. An $8 per person suggested donation is requested and payable in advance during registration. Come by the Center Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to get tickets no later than Wednesday, Sept. 13.

George Ranch Historical Park Trip, Richmond. Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 8 a.m. Trip sign-up is on a first-come, first-served basis at Big Stone Lodge. The cost is $10 per person. Lunch is on your own at Gringo’s Mexican Kitchen. Transportation is provided for individuals 50 and better through Harris County Precinct 4’s Senior Adult Program. A Harris County Precinct 4 bus will pick up and drop off participants at Big Stone Lodge, located at 709 Riley Fuzzel Road in Spring.

Thai Fruit Carving. Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. Create delicious works of art with Chef Sucharee Yossunthorn at Big Stone Lodge in Dennis Johnston Park. Once reserved for the tables of royal families, these beautiful, edible creations make perfect special event centerpieces. Space is limited. Call 281-350-1029 to register.

Big Stone Lodge’s Third Annual Arts and Crafts Exhibit. Friday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. View incredible artwork created by local artists at Big Stone Lodge’s third annual Arts and Crafts Exhibit. Enjoy light refreshments and meet the artists that produce these beautiful and inspiring creations. Artists interested in showcasing their pieces should register with staff at Big Stone Lodge, open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The deadline for entries is Friday, Sept. 22.
