New Buses Enhance Day Trips

Senior adults can hit the road on Precinct 4 buses with confidence in their safety and comfort.

Senior adults can hit the road on Precinct 4 buses with confidence in their safety and comfort. The expanded bus fleet transports residents to a wide array of educational and recreational venues and events, including festivals, museums, plays, concerts, theatrical performances, and sports games.

“Thanks to Commissioner Cagle, our bus fleet has grown from 10 buses in 2010 to 19 buses in 2017,” says Jan Sexton, director of Precinct 4’s community centers and Senior Adult Program. With senior adult day trips in high demand, the fleet expansion is necessary. Precinct 4 keeps buses at an optimal level of operation. New vehicles replace decommissioned buses that reach a specified mileage or age. “We are gradually retiring older buses and Precinct 4’s community partner sites provide senior adults with additional pick-up locations across the precinct. The Senior Adult Program currently offers 15 bus trips each month from Precinct 4’s community centers and community partner sites.

Additionally, buses are available for use by any organized group of 10 or more that meets within the boundaries of Precinct 4. Precinct 4’s bus fleet can accommodate small and large groups—from 14 riders or less up to 41 passengers. Fifteen buses are equipped with a lift for those with mobility issues. Sexton notes that buses are inspected twice a day and receive a thorough cleaning after each outing. “Senior adults can rest assured that buses are sparkling clean!”

To maximize educational opportunities, bus outings now feature Apple iPads, allowing riders to research their destination’s historical information and facts on the way. Precinct 4 and Barbara Bush Library partnered to provide this learning tool. “There is a great deal of Precinct 4 pride in providing quality programs, events, and services to our senior adults. These bus trips are recreational, educational, and, most of all, fun!” Sexton concludes.

Registering for Senior Adult Program activities and events is easier now than ever before thanks to a new online system. Details on day trips, luncheons, dances, and a variety of other events are now easily accessible on Precinct 4’s website. The user-friendly system displays information in chronological order, so residents can easily see which exciting activities are coming up next. Additionally, a handy search function located on the left side of the webpage allows users to narrow their search by the type of activity, date, and neighborhood. To make a reservation, users first create a username and password. For senior adults who need guidance on making online reservations, staff members are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. by calling 281- 893-3726. To make reservations, visit
