Children's Summer Programs

En Español

Mercer is offering children's summer programs the last Monday through Wednesday in June and July from 9 a.m. to noon for children ages 9 to 12 years old. Each class is limited to 15 students, and includes hands-on activities and outdoor observations. A $10 per child, per class fee covers the cost of course materials. Each student will receive a set of binoculars to use during the outdoor activities. Students need to bring insect repellent, water, and a snack for the break; wear a hat, comfortable play clothes, tennis shoes, and socks.

Program Schedule

Mondays, June 28 and July 26, 2010: Bird Species and Identification. Each student will receive a handout with pictures and descriptions of some of the species of local birds.

Tuesdays, June 29 and July 27, 2010: Reptiles and Amphibians. The indoor presentation features information on the various groups of reptiles and amphibians, and the outdoor session will feature finding various reptiles and amphibians as well as netting tadpoles out of a pond. Each student will receive a handout with pictures and descriptions of some of the local reptiles and amphibians.

Wednesdays, June 30 and July 28, 2010: Butterflies and Dragonflies. Students will observe butterflies and dragonflies outside. Each student will receive a handout with pictures and descriptions of some of the local butterflies and dragonflies.

Parents must register their children for each date separately, and complete a release form that must be signed, notarized, and turned in to the Visitor Center Office one week prior to the first session attended. If a child signs up for more than one date, only one release form is needed for that child. Children will not be registered until a completed release form and registration fee is received.

Since there is a greater demand for summer children’s programs, please call the Visitor Center at (281) 443-8731 to cancel reservations as soon as you know that your child is unable to attend. This will more fairly accommodate those on the waiting list. Course fees will not be refunded when cancellation is made after the Wednesday prior to the session date.

Please drop your children off at 8:45 a.m. and pick them up promptly at noon.
