Humphrey Jackson and Sarah (Merriman) Jackson

Humphrey Jackson and his wife Sarah (Merriman), along with their four children, came to Texas in 1823 as members of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred colonists. When they settled east of the San Jacinto River, Jackson's land grant opened up the San Jacinto District and expanded the perimeter of Austin's grant, providing an additional area for Anglo settlement. Sarah, who was Jackson’s second wife, died in July 1824 at the age of 28. The monument reads “Humphrey Jackson-Born Nov. 24, 1784, Died Jan. 18, 1833, age 48 years” (front); “Native of Belfast, Ireland-came to America 1810 and married Sarah Merriman in LA Oct. 13, 1814, settled here in 1823” (right); “Sarah Merriman-wife of H. Jackson-Died July 1824, age 28 years” (reverse side). The zinc marker at their grave site was built by Monumental Bronze Works of Bridgeport, Connecticut.
